Inspired by schliemann and homer: focused on king minos, 1898: end of turkish rule, 1899: property at knossos, 1900-1905: main excavation. 2000-1400: partially deciphered, documents are most likely to be inventory. 1500: script is syllabic and early form of greek language. Is deciphered and has many similarities to greek language: michael ventris and john chadwick passion for decoding. There is written evidence that zeus, athena, were mentioned as gods in the mycenaean culture. Palace of knossos no idea if there was a monarch there or not: from use of linear b palace was used for many agriculture means. Palace restoration: partially reconstructed by evans, assuming that things would have probably looked a certain way. Egyptian palace (medinet habu: structures have some similarities to those of greek, major difference is that egyptians represented their pharaoh on the palaces, where as with greek culture there were not evidence for a strong ruler. Priestesses: darker skin represented man, whereas lighter skin represented woman.
