Sir gawain and the green knight fitts 3 and 4. He is king arthur"s nephew privileged position to hold. He is described as the ideal knight of the pentangle, a man of virtues. He has the courage and determination to persevere on his quest north and who can defeat any number of giants, ogres and other foes in the wilderness. His shield with the pentangle device and the picture of the virgin mary and all that this signifies (including spiritual protection) is taken from him. Notice that he seems to relinquish it without a second thought. He has been stripped of the objects that signify his devotional identity his essence as a christian knight. When he puts on the new robes he is given in line 866 the courtiers see him as an emblem of springtime the time of year associated with love, and particularly with courtly love. The penitential aspects of advent are minimized in this court (lines 888-900)
