Shift: video games: faceless monsters to mow down. As metaphors for resistance to authority/protect culture. The 99%; desire for a classless society. First modern monster: the only modern myth is the myth of zombies (deleuze and guattari) Zombie as the first non-western monster (no genealogy in european tradition and no real presence in gothic lit. ) Visual rather than literary monster; plague victims. Uncanny familiarity of the zombie as a dis-possessed monster in human form. Uncanny: someone or something familiar returning in physical form (ghost, doppelgangers, corpse) Ancient fear of the dead: look dead, unlike vampires. Most people prefer not to think about death. Two zombies: spirit taken from body (haunts dreams of victims, body without spirit (used to work in fields; devoid of soul, identity) The zombie we are used to today. Whip used in some ceremonies to separate soul from body. Ultimate fear: used exclusively as working body without agency.
