Document Summary

Echecrates: was not there when socrates died, but wants to know what happened & his last words. Phaedo: nothing gives him more pleasure than recalling the memory of socrates; is not hesitant to tell echecrates about what happened. Spent his last hours talking to his friends about death and immortality of the soul. Epicurus; heliocentric philosopher every human being lives in a city without walls . We are all vulnerable and will all face death. Socrates has two claims for the immortality of the soul: a philosopher should not grieve at the prospect of his own death, suicide is wrong. St. thomas aquinas says suicide is an offense against the gods, the community, and yourself. Cebes: if death is a good thing, why is suicide wrong. Socrates says that our lives are not our own, and that we are possessions of the gods, so it is wrong to destroy ourselves unless we get permission from the gods.
