PHIL 3050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Personal Identity, Gary Becker, Capability Approach
Document Summary
Culture is an accumulaion of values and pracices: exist in familial life, the sense gives a feeling of belonging. We have powerful beliefs systems: kinds of things that cannot be measured. Culture is a medium of interpretaion: what is important. Culture is a limited and parial experience yet universal. Necessary and irreducible: recognize that certain cultures have pracices that are unfair to certain people. Approaching other cultures through our lens we are engaging in imperialism. We treat the other cultures as progressing instead of being there. It is a way of imposing our own thoughts on others: especially when doing so through the western lens. All intervenion is associated with the risk that the speciicity of the culture will not be accommodated. Three basic choices: not intervening, not deciding, intervening and risking imperialism. We have a universal obligaion to protect human kind and their dignity the dignity of women is equal to men.
