Psychology lecture 11 - treatment of psychological disorder. Stereotypes: popular culture- wedding et al found that although some movies and tv shoes display sy(cid:373)patheti(cid:272) portrayals of perso(cid:374) (cid:449)ith (cid:373)e(cid:374)tal ill(cid:374)ess (cid:373)ost do (cid:374)ot . this is the (cid:373)i(cid:374)ority and many continue to do. When films get it wrong-> films tend to depict persons with mental illness ( epically psychosis) as unpredictable and dangerously violent. Films commonly depict mental health professional as either inept or arrogant and manipulative. Social stigma regarding mental illness is a major cause of relatively lower rates of help seeking by persons who would benefit from metal health treatment. Examples- freud in the movies and tv- the presumption that mental illness has as traumatic etiology is a well-worn plot device. When done right- irony is that films can also have greater impact than almost any other type of information. Other good examples- bi-polar disorders, insomnia disorder sand ptsd.
