Freud"s work is routed in european culture. Downplayed the importance of instinct (the biological forces. Karen horney and erich fromm: both have different approaches. Horney inspired feminist psychology and psychiatry by reinforcing social and interpersonal views: came from a social worker/left wing perspective. Emphasized impact of ego on personality and development. Anna freud, erik erikson: freud analyzed traumatized children. Emphasized the importance of early relationships with objects: developmental theories on attachment. Early generation psychoanalyst who fled from europe: heavily impacted american psychology. Wrote a very prominent psychiatry textbook: in favor of freud. Links personality and health (and environmental factors: first model suggested that certain types of character (or personality types) were linked with certain illnesses. Personality and character used interchangeably in 1939: personality is the type of defense mechanisms a person tended to use. Each illness was associated with character pattern. The problem with the model was individuals interviewed were very different, not identifying with particular characters.
