Today"s objectives: explore social work theory and its purpose, look at different models of social problems, define and discuss conflict vs consensus models, review the concept of anti-oppressive practice. Post modernism: mullaly connects this with his idea of constructivist theory, the powerful often get to decide if something is a social problem to begin with, less powerful groups are labeled as deviant to support power. Ideology and even our language produces a worldview that supports the dominant group: modernism, truth, knowledge and morality are objective facts and can be discovered through rational inquiry. Once we figure these things out, we can apply them and have a better world: post modernism, we cannot step outside of truth, knowledge and morality to get an objective view of them. They are always filtered through the lens of power. Michel foucault: the judges of normality are present everywhere.
