General custer is wiped out at little big horn. Native group that wanted to take back their traditional land, but the chief did not want to fight the white people. They wanted to get away from their reservations that they had been put on. Reservations were not supplied well, they were not on traditional land, they were not pretty. So they decided to break for canada they had to fight their way out. Howard was the one chasing the nez perc as they tried to escape. His job to get the nez perc back to the reservation. Surrounded and caught them 70 km south of canadian border. Chief joseph after they were escorted back to the reservation . Gave u. s. government and mexico government fits. Takes advantage of the confusion of mexico at the time by skipping the border. Becomes a celebrity some other native people looked at him as being too cozy with the whites .
