NURS 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Force-Feeding, Aspiration Pneumonia, Therapeutic Irrigation
Document Summary
Nasogastric tubes: placement of tube into the stomach or intestine through the mouth/nasal passage/abdominal wall. Decompression from obstruction (filling up with bile and gastric juices) Lavage: irrigation and removal of ingested toxins. Gavage: administers feedings and medications (think g for giving) Compression: stop hemorrhage by application of pressure (sengstaken-blakemore), use a bag of ice cold water. #1 tube used for decompression, also used for lavage and gavage. Used for low continuous or intermittent suction 25 mmhg. Blue pigtail of salem sump is used as a anti-reflux air vent. Inserted and placement is confirmed at the bedside. Used for decompression only on low intermittent suction (30-40 mmhg) Inserted and placement confirmed at the bedside. May be used for feeding in some medical areas. Single lumen - closed system, feeding only. Gastronomy: surgical opening created into stomach for purpose of administering fluids and foods via a feeding tube.
