Nurs 407 lab #1: ng tube (med-surg readings) Gi intubation : insertion of a flexible tube into the stomach beyond the pylorus into. Decompress stomach & remove gas/fluid (common w/ bowel obstruction; Dx disorders of gi motility & others (i. e. barium. ) Ad meds & feeds (i. e. impaired gag reflex. ) Aspirate gastric contents for analysis (i. e. h. pylori. ) Inserted while pt. is in fowler"s position. Maintain fowler"s when ad meds or with hour following. Decompression . occasionally used remove fluid/gas from upper gi tract = short-term (3-4wks) ad of meds/feeds. Single lumen (hollow part); 14-18fr (plastic . Circular markings at specific points on tube for insertion guide; marking made on tube to indicate midpoint. tube cautiously advanced until mark reaches pt nostril (= tube in stomach). Connected to low intermittent suction (30-40 mmhg) -> used to avoid stomach lining erosion/tearing from constant adherence of tube"s lumen to mucosal lining in stomach.
