Document Summary

Galileo would eventually pass away in 1642, but that very next year another giant of physics and motion was born: isaac newton. Newton"s early life was complicated, he came from a broken home, and his academic career was momentarily delayed due to the outbreak of the plague and an unsuccessful pursuit in the study of alchemy. Despite all this though, he was able to totally redefine the field of physics and mechanics. In the year 1687 he published the principia , arguably the most important physics text ever published. Newton covered a vast number of topics in this book, but for the purposes of this course, his ideas can be distilled down to four key points: Mass is a measure of an object"s density, and its bulk (volume) The quantity of motion is the measure of the same, arising from the velocity and quantity of matter conjointly. The quantity of motion is another word for momentum.
