Continuation of research design: experiments, correlational study (continuation) Correlation can tell us that relationship exists, and the direction of the relationship and the strength of the relationship*. Variables are measured numerically and accessed with the correlation coefficient. Categorizing people into groups: parents categorized according to their parenting style. Grouped according to naturally pre-existing differences, not by the manipulation of independent variable. Measure heights of boys in grade 10 and their popularity (counting the number of friends). Not categorising into groups makes it easier to differentiate from an experiment: descriptive study. Simply describes behaviour without correlating or establishing any cause-effect relationship. Descriptive studies can be narrow like studying one behaviour or one specific aspect of a species. Descriptive studies can be broad like studying an entire species. Jane goodall researched on apes for 30 years and describes every aspect of the species behaviour, without manipulating their environment or making correlations.
