Observational research: if you want to understand a phenomenon, you typically need to start by making observations about it. Naturalistic observation: the goal is to make observations of behavior in a natural setting. Ethology: aims to study animal behavior on its own terms , which means attempts at creating natural circumstances are heavily relied upon. In the rat park experiments by bruce alexander, alexander demonstrated that addictive behavior towards morphine was a product of environmental influences more than the drug itself. Previous research on addictive substances had been biased by standard (deprived) living conditions of laboratory animals: young children display different social dynamics when they are around adults than when they are with their peers. If we want to study child peer-dynamics, ethological concepts like studying the animal on its own terms become relevant. Peer dynamics like bullying are difficult to study, because children do not produce the behavior in the same way in the presence of adults.
