The biological and anatomical differences distinguishing females from males: gender. Social expectations about behavior regarded as appropriate for the members of each sex. Socially constructed- the social expectations regarding what is appropriate in males and females in regards to behavior, is a product of social process. (creates social environments that sometimes change and pressures because of environmental needs) Sex and gender are not easily separated: gender role socialization. The learning of gender roles through social factors such as schooling, the media and family. Rewards and punishments- if you hit near the target of your gender, you get rewarded. If you don"t, you get punished (social neglect, mockery, ridicule, etc. These are affected by race, ethnicity, social class and religion. People behave according to how they are supposed to act; they adopt a gender role. Gender leakage- since we are performing these roles, something underlining those social concepts begin to leek through. (how we learn to perform gender)
