Viewing religion as being marketed(primarily in western societies) may help explain why secularization has not been as pronounced as predicted. Religious services are offered by competing denominations to attract people who desire religious and related experiences and activities. Counselling and self-help, social events, child care, discussion groups, special musical events are marketed in the same manner as cars, holidays. A religious monopoly exists when one religious group(denomination) has acquired special privileges from the state, preventing or restricting other religious groups from marketing their brand to consumers. When consumers can access only one brancd the service provider does not have to innovate and recruit new customers. Satisfaction(of desire for religious experience) is limited to only those whose needs match. Declining religious groups in north america shakers (farmers, eastern u. s seed innovation, architecture, simplicity in furniture, hard workers, no sex) bad marketing.
