Market (rational choice) theory takes the religion out of religion; people don"t just go shopping for religion. Alternative religious movements are interesting to study because of how they intersect with other parts of society. Technology: printing press, automobile, cell phone, stirrup horse (before that warfare was on foot) Demographic shifts: aging society, immigration, birthrate. War: rebuilding after war germany, japan after wwii. Auguste compte (1798-1857): law of three stages theological, metaphysical, positivist. Durkheim, herbert spencer, max weber (religion to science) Economic growth must be part of such evolution. All countries have to go through same sequence. Conservative thinkers tend to see social change as destructive of the strengths of a society. Some political and mainstream and religious leaders; most fundamentalist religious groups. Oswald spengler decline of the west civilizations are like human beings, with phases like childhood, youth, manhood and old age.
