The un, for statistical purposes, defines youth as those persons between the ages of 15-24 years, without prejudice to other definitions by member states. There are many nations in the un, the youth definition to some nations may not be the same for all nations. Some nations do not have a definition for youth. The period between childhood and adult age. (oxford english dictionary) This course is really focused on western societies with particular attention given to the anglo. American atlantic region (canada, the united states and the united kingdom). We always have to be careful not to universalize western understandings. Different societies come from different civilization background and have different histories. Even countries that may seem relatively modern (russia, greece, brazil, south africa) may have reached that point from a very different trajectory. We shouldn"t judge their version of modernity against ours, especially if we start from the point that ours is the best.
