-Often from a male perspective (economic male perspective)
-Ignores numerous other kinds of social inequality
-Gender, Race, ethnicity etc…
-Marx cares more about it being productive in economic sense
-materialist philosophy
-traditionally “women’s work” is not seen as economically productive
-devalues racism experiences, ethnic and racial minorities don’t have access to resources
CRITICAL THEORIES (BEYOND CLASSICAL MARXISM) reconstructed Marxism
-Can view subcultures as rebellions
-Can also view subcultures as mirrors of the capitalism, patriarchy and racism
-Subcultures may be seen as a reaction to oppression or an expression of youthful creativity.
-Youth subcultures also can be co-opted for the purposes of capitalism
-Some theorists such as John Fiske have talked about youth consumption as a form of resistance
(form of guerilla warfare)
-punk culture putting themselves outside the capitalist culture
POST-MODERN YOUTH: AGENCY, SUBJECTIVITY AND FRAGMENTATION
-Depending on the position of the people describing it youthful energy is described as ranging
from resistance, rebellion to delinquency
-Build on some of the work of Michel Foucault.
-Youth rebellion seen as the way that young people fit themselves and their identities into
