What is geology: the study of the earth. The milky way galaxy: estimated: 1000 million stars. the milky way is a spiral galaxy. at the centre is a core. Sagittarius and centaurus form spiral around the core. Our sun in situated in the periphery of the spiral near the cygnus-orion arm: the concept of galaxy came in the late 1900s, milky way is not the only spiral galaxy in the universe. The andromeda galaxy is the closet spiral galaxy to us. Milky way position in the known universe: milky way is a part of local group of galaxies which is a part of virgo supercluster. Galaxy red- and blue shift study of spectra emitted by the galaxies. Slipher noted that the galaxies that move away from earth had a distinct red shift and the ones that move closer to earth presents a blue shift .
