The term research refers to any scientific endeavour to gain greater knowledge using disciplined inquiry or systematic investigation. Disciplined inquiry means that the methods of that research will be able to withstand the scrutiny of the relevant research community. Human participants is a more appropriate term than human subjects because of the active role of participants and the need reflect the core principles of research ethics involving humans. Participants are individuals whose data is collected for the purpose of the research. Researchers must consider whether information is identifiable or non- identifiable. In other words, will the disclosure of the research information allow others to identify the study participants. Research may involve interaction with human individuals who themselves are not the focus of the research.
