Surveillance: mutations continually arise in the body but are normally recognized as foreign cells and destroyed. Innate immunity: exists in a person without prior contact to an antigen. This type involves a nonspecific response: neutrophils and monocytes are the white blood cells primarily involved. Innate immunity that is not antigen specific is the type present at birth. Acquired immunity: the development of immunity, either active or passive: active acquired immunity: results from the invasion of the body by foreign substances such as microorganisms which leads to the development of antibodies and sensitized lymphocytes.
