July 23rd = development and the state in the global south. Political/institutional/state development: development of government institutions, democracy. Economic development: most common; development in terms of economic growth, usually measured in gdp per capitia. Gdp per capita: measure of a country"s average wealth. Measures total value of goods/services produced in an economy divided. Types of development continued by the number of people in that economy. Human development: economic and social dimensions of development. Measured bt eh human development index (hdi) as healthy life, knowledge and standard of living (gdp per capita) Sustainable development: emphasis on sustainable economic and social development. Environment, responsible consumption, well-being, decent work, reduced inequalities, etc. Much more difficult to measure; many different indicators. Post development: critically deconstructs development" as a discourse. Focuses on the inherent power relations within discourse. Offers alternative approaches to what constitutes development" (i. e. localized, grassroots approaches) Has both economic and non-economic dimensions (i. e. infant mortality, literacy)
