Document Summary

Lecture outline week 5: neandertals and anatomically modern humans. Western europe to central asia (middle east) ~130 000 years ago to 24 000 years ago (some new information/conflicting dates) Cold adaptations: larger, stockier, more barrel shaped chest region. More like h. erectis: mid-facial prognathism: face pulled forward o size is the first hint in determining what it is. Newborn neanderthals and humans don"t differ much in appearance of skull (nancy ninugh purvis) Thinker skull maybe heavier musculature due to a stockier body. Neanderthal teeth show wear patterns that suggest they were used as tools. This would have put teeth and jaws under a lot of stress. Neanderthals start to show a different facial features that is not shown when they are older. Minugh purcis by about age 10 neanderthals had different facial features (forward thrusting jaw- prognathism) May not be genetic differences so much as behavioural activities. Due to use of teeth/jaws as tools on early age (bones display plasticity)
