Document Summary

There were different systems of education for samurai warriors and commoners which were completely separate from one another. Warriors went to schools established by the local domains or regional governments. Their education contained teachings in areas of confucianism, western learning (science and technology), and national learning (japanese classics) This education was much more advanced than that of the commoners. These were the only women in this era who received any type of formal education. Terakoya: a temple barrack school, was a private school of sorts for commoners. Teachers for commoners were unemployed warriors or priests. Commoners would learn less advanced forms of reading, writing and math. Depending on one"s occupation during this period literacy rates varied greatly. Among samurai warriors the literacy rate was almost 100% Among merchants in large cities the literacy rate was between 70 and 80% Among artisans in large cities the literacy rate was between 50 and 60%
