Mid-term will cover module 1 (plant reproduction) and 2 (animal nutrition: need to know definitions and will make use of chapter questions from textbook. All life is based on plants (o2, food, beverages, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, fibre, fuel) Carl linneaus came up with the system of classification. Hierarchical taxonomic groupings: species, genus, family, order, class, division, superdivision, subkingdom, kingdom, domain. Family name = type genus + aceae: sunflower family: asteraceae = aster + aceae, mustard family: brassicaceae = brassica + ceae, note: old names still in use, crussiderae = brassicaceae. Species = genus + scientific epithet + authority: ex. Species: group of individuals that when they interbreed produce viable & fertile progeny w/out artificial intervention note: plants often have exceptions to these ex. Subspecies: capable of interbreeding and forming fertile offspring, but not in nature due to geographical or other barriers ex.
