Hierarchical taxonomic groupings: species, genus, family, order, class, division, superdivision, subkingdom, kingdom, domain. Family name = type genus + aceae: sunflower family: asteraceae = aster + aceae, mustard family: brassicaceae = brassica + ceae, note: old names still in use, crussiderae = brassicaceae. Species = genus + scientific epithet + authority: ex. Species: group of individuals that when they interbreed produce viable & fertile progeny w/out artificial intervention note: plants often have exceptions to these ex. Subspecies: capable of interbreeding and forming fertile offspring, but not in nature due to geographical or other barriers ex.
