BIOM 3200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Epididymis, Breastfeeding, Zona Pellucida
Document Summary
Cyu 6: primordial ovarian follicles are immature oocytes. Secondary follicles are the next step and difer from primary follicle by being larger and containing luid illed vesicles. With more growth these will fuse together to form a single luid illed cavity (antrum) at which point it is called a mature or graaian follicle. Only one follicle will mature to a fully matured graaian follicle and undergo ovulaion, a process that will expel the oocyte from the follicle into the uterine tube. All other follicle will undergo atresia, a type of apoptosis that leads to the breakdown of the follicle: fimbria are long inger-like processes that cover the ovaries and help move ova from the ovary into the uterine tube. The walls of the uterine tubes are covered with cilia which become abundant around the ime ovulaion occurs and assist in the movement of oocytes and liquids down the oviducts. Spermatozoa are stored in acidic condiions are immobile.
