Fiber crops are not for consumption they are like cotton to make clothes, paper, or rope. Cotton is a boll, its attached to the seed, it"s an extension of seed coat, fluffy fibers. When you plant, you try to synchronize so that all the flowers open at the same time so harvesting is easier, today you use machines to harvest. The fibers can make rayon or cellophane; they are chemically treated to create these. But leaf seed and bast are the ones we use. Lignin gives the fiber and it is a suger that has many molecules of suger , which gives strength to the plant. In cotton you get celuose but it could be lignin or cellulose that gives the strength. 3 types of cells in plants cell wall (thickening) +parenchyma: basic cells not thick, without any cell wall thicking.
