English term rice is derived the greek work oryza. Species sativa is latin for cultivated; glaberrima is latin for hairless. Asian and african rice can withstand drier climates. Asian rice originated in lowland areas prone to flooding. 11% of the world"s arable land is used to grow rice arable means a place where you can grow agriculture. Oryza sativa there is 15 thousand varieties that can be grown today. Indica is not sticky when cooked, japonica is sticky when cooked and this is because of what kind of starch is found in the plant when harvested. In north america we grow sativica japonica. Short sticky japonica rice was used to build the wall, because when cooked it releases a milopectin which allowed them to fuse the walls together.
