ENVS 2060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Leaky Bucket, Crop Residue, Cover Crop
Document Summary
Are there because of plants growing on the surface. More organic matter means that it will absorb herbicides so you need to increase amount of herbicides depending on amount of om. All carbon starts in the atmosphere and will eventually end up back there. Co2 in atmosphere > photosynthesis > plant carbon (into the system) Once in the system: plant respiration > puts co2 into the atmosphere, plants eaten by animals/humans > giving co2 back into atmosphere, plant decomposition > animals/plants die > giving co2 into the soil. All goes eventually back into the atmosphere. A balance of co2 being added to the soil compared to that that is being lost. Leaky bucket: the fuller you make the bucket, the more holes that leak out. More om in the soil the more decomposition in the soil: as water level drops, some holes stop leaking water less loss. Decrease input to system, om decreases, co2 will decrease to equilibrium.
