Prior to the 1970s, adolescent love in western culture was structured by dating very formal. Teens now are more likely to go out in mixed-gender groups without any specific pairing up. Boys and girls may go out simply as friends. *emerging adults say intimacy is first, then companionship, recreation, status. What adolescents look for in a partner changes over tie. Responding to the male"s gestures in the public domain. Greater sense than you have a social companion. Romantic experiences are associated with both positive and negative outcomes. Around age 16 typical age but how do they handle their emotions. Sternberg"s theory of love: passion: intense emotions, physical and emotional. Intimacy: feeling of closeness and emotional attachment: commitment: a pledge to love someone for the long-term. In most adolescent love relationships, commitment is either missing or is highly tentative. Two principles of adolescent love: infatuation and romantic love. The experience of passion is virtually universal.
