Individual adjustment in old age is accomplished through withdrawing (disengaging) from social life, letting go of social roles and activities. The fundamental proposition of disengagement theory is that the society withdraws from the individual, which is viewed as functional for society, and at the same time, the individual wishes to be less involved in social interaction. Note: activity theory only focuses on the individual whereas disengagement looks at micro and macro. Focuses on individual adjustment in later life and holds that people make choices in an effort to preserve ties with the past.
