Not going to have successful policies if don"t address stigma. Older men have highest rates of suicide worldwide. Why take a social determinants approach to health when thinking about policy for an aging population? can"t only have this approach, need another one. Health care was previously based on medical model (lets make sick ppl better) this approach is much more broad. Health is central to social policy (i. e. in workplace) Health care is what we do when we"re already sick. 1/3 of dementias can be prevented by changes in lifestyle. Want to compress the time older people live with illness. Underprivileged only make up 6% of income, affluent make up 36% Underprivileged more likely to be hospitalized, developmental delays. How do we account for this knowledge in policy: taking social determinants approach complicates things from the policy side, work is still done in silos (isolated) in many places- diff ministries involved in decision making.
