By the end of the 15th (turn of 16th) artists were only beginning to start painting things other than biblical scenes: self portraits were considered to be highly narcissistic before this point. Kings start to paint themselves into biblical scenes to balance out the self portrait vs. biblical paintings (family of manuel i of portugal, 1518) Wrote about his reaction to the black death in 1348. He was in spain when he did this. After the black death we can see that artists start to write/paint/create statues of loved.
