Underground revolution, a lot of persian elements in this movement. Umayyad"s were godless, and they were going to overthrow them to put everyone back on the right track again. People who thought ali should have been caliph supported the abbasids: they thought the abbasids were going to rectify. Military leader (ex slave) persian man: helps take over. Doesn"t take power for himself but gives it to others: 750 abbasids win over ummayads, abbasids create baghdad, and that is their centre of power. First abbasid caliph: don"t use their names anymore and create other names for themselves, rightly guided by god shadow of god on earth . These names implies a devine right to rule. Power is in the hands of the abbasid family. Persian governing practice and culture really flourish: high governing post = influence at court, wazeer = minister (government official) and clerks.
