Beat: a rhythmic movement, or is the speed at which a piece of music is played. Duple meter: a musical metre characterized by a primary division of 2 beats to the bar (i. e. 2/2, 6/8) Measure: a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats in which each beat is represented by a particular note value and the boundaries of the bar are indicated by vertical bar lines. Breath rhythm (phrase): concepts and practices related to grouping consecutive melodic notes, both in their composition and performance. Rubato: a musical term referring to expressive and rhythmic freedom by a slight speeding up and then slowing down of the tempo of a piece at the discretion of the soloist or the conductor. Basie and ellington transcend the swing era b/c they stayed on the road longer than other musicians but mainly because their music is intrinsic to the development of jazz. Some were white while others were black.
