Sufism is based on islam, but is a mystical dimension of islam (not all muslims consider it a legitimate expression of islam) Many rituals of music, dance, recitation, poetry. Text is very important, vocals are valued (different from hindustani music where instruments are valued) Na"at = similar to a ghazal but different ordering of the sections. A ritual ceremony (1-2 hours long); same ritual order of rhythms. Starts in free rhythm, becomes more rhythmic, then drums enter (very rhythmic and metric) steady increase in rhythm. Aerophone (an upright flute, similar to a recorder), about 1. 5-3 ft in length. No mouthpiece just a hole; create mouthpiece with own teeth. Need separate neys for different maqams (scales) Groups of sufis who recite religious texts and perform a ritual of whirling dances. Play at teahouses, streets, weddings, religious ceremonies.
