Act as energy source if there is a deficiency in other macronutrients. Broken down into aas for protein synthesis and other metabolism. His was the last one to be added. Proteins are not essential but the aas are. 3 main parts in our body contain relatively more protein (~35%) Skeletal muscle actually contain ~74% water and only about 20% protein. All essential aas can be obtained by consuming animal meat. Plants have a limit in which aas are present in them. Since they do not have the same needs for protein/aa as humans do. People have to eat a blend of different plants to make sure that they get all the essential aas. Alpha c is the carbon that is connected to both the amino and the carbonyl group. The amino and carbonyl groups of aas are charged at physiological ph. This increases the polarity, therefore aas are water soluble. D-aa: amino group on the right side.
