Body has several mechs to resist foreign invaders, both nonspeci c and speci c: acquired immune de ciency syndromes cause a failure in the speci c mechs. Nonspeci c defence mechanisms: considered rst line of defence: skin & mucous membranes function as physical barrier to foreign agents; Cells routinely sloughed from the surfaces of both, removing harmful organisms: skin surface normally has slightly acidic ph; helps prevent growth of some organisms, mucus secreted by membranes of digestive, urogenital & respiratory tracts; Lysozyme in tears, acid in stomach, digestive enzymes: in ammation. Binding of a hapten alters normal molecules in body; so body begins reacting against them. Certain antigens are normally separated from the immune system since embryonic life, so tolerance to them doesn"t develop; if released in later life an immune response to them may develop.
