PHIL 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Making Money, Dust Bunny, Hypothetical Imperative
Document Summary
Aristotle thinks that everything has a purpose. His thinks there are four different types of causes and explanation to things. Example: dry erase marker: material causes / material principles of explanation. We can understand it if we know how its put together. Even an image on a computer screen has a material cause: formal causes / formal principles of explanation. You can imagine all the materials separate that create the formal object. All our copies of blackburn"s book have exactly the same form (same pages, letters, material: efficient cause / efficient principles of explanation. Example: protein bars don"t grow off trees - made in a factory. There is a process that begins without a protein bar, then all those small things are the causal process that produce the bar. Another example: building a house: final cause / final principles of explanation. Example: the protein bar has a purpose - so people can eat it and get stronger faster.
