Phil1010- thomas hobbes & the state of nature. : jean-jacques rousseau argued that the amount of time needed for the transition was longer than the age of this world, as recorded in the scriptures. Also believed that there are contemporary examples of peoples living in the state of nature~ while john locke thought this was true of many groups living in 17th century america. A thought experiment- devices of the imagination used to investigate the nature of things. Hypothetical: existed prior to the development of societies. Relevant ideas: human nature (what motivates us), if something is moral, conflict (cooperation vs. competitive), how we form relationships, resources available (environment), strengths & weaknesses, Worried by the civil war: thought his country was falling into a state of nature. Wanted to persuade readers the importance of government. Hobbes view: in the absence of government, human nature would inevitably bring us into severe conflict.
