PHIL 3040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Paternalism
Document Summary
Some theorists have suggested that (1) the distinction between harm to oneself and harm to the others is not as clear-cut as. Mill wants it to be since there are harms beyond the obvious physical harms we may suffer as the result of someone"s action. Gerald dworkin begins by unpacking mill"s harm principal in two restrict others; 2) individual"s own good is never a sufficient different dicta: 1)self-protection is a sufficient warrant to warrant to restrict his or her action. He leaves aside the first half of the principal since no one would dispute that and move on to examine the second half of it. Against the second half of the principal of harm, dworkin wants to claim that these are cases where interference with person"s liberty of action is justified by reasons concerning the individuals welfare ,good ,happiness, needs, and interest.
