PHIL 3910 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Krisha, Vedas, Virtue Ethics
Document Summary
For a brahmin, the veda"s are unnecessary, in the same way a pond is unnecessary in a place flooded with water everywhere. The veda"s can be dangerous; the undiscerning who contend there is nothing else fundamentalists, people who take it literally. Rejoice in the letter, whose nature is desire, people who are interested in filling their appetites rather than knowledge, or whose goal is heaven (that"s being selfish, thinking in terms of fulfilling your desires) They lay down specialized rights/not well established in atman, the babamigita regards the vedas as useless and dangerous because it encourages you to want things and get things by prayer. So that you don"t unsettle the minds of people who don"t understand it. Those who rejoice in the vedas have some sort of a moral compass, even if it"s not the best one, but if that"s all they have even if it"s not a good thing.
