Language politics can be traced back as far as the 1867 constitution act but did very little to promote french across canada. To promote french they had bilingual stamps and currency, but that"s it. The royal commission of bilingualism and biculturalism - 1963. Meant to assess situation of french language across canada but also multiculturalism. Wake up guys we are supposed to have two languages in this country and only 1% of population is speaking the other language . Created by trudeau, he wanted to do something proactive. He made english and french the two official languages in government. All services had to be offered in french and english. It gave french and english equal status in government. Applied french and english in all departments in parliament, politicians had to convert in french and english. French was not spoken by most of the politicians- but they are required by law to speak both french and english.
