As a mode of inquiry political theory focuses on values and principles that inform politics. Political theorists are most concerned with the normative dimensions of politics and study politics in order to find out how the gap between what happens and what ought to happen can be bridged. Though it is a subfield in the discipline of political science, political theory is in fact closer to philosophy in terms of its intellectual orientation.
