This creates: strong ties between the military elite and the autocrat, weak ties between the mid-ranking/junior officers and the autocrat, and weak ties between the military elite and mid-ranking/junior officers. When militaries share a common threat perception with the autocrat, they are more likely to identify with the regime. Autocrats create a sense of shared aversion based on: values/ideas such as anti-colonialism. Identity ethnic, sectarian, regional or clan loyalties.
