With the exception of iran under the shah (the monarchy fell with the iranian revolution in 1979), monarchies in the middle east are exceptionally stable. The gulf monarchies are the least democratic in the entire region. Why have arab monarchies done such a good job of surviving. Many scholars point to oil as answer.
