Document Summary

This approach is important for investigating disease outbreaks, conducting descriptive studies, disease surveillance, and for public health. Now, there are two main types of analytical (explanatory) studies: observational studies, and, experimental studies. In observational studies, the researchers have no control over the allocation of subjects to the groups being compared. We therefore watch a group of subjects and observe their exposure and outcome status. These approaches are good for hypothesis generation and there are generally three types: cross-sectional, case-control, and, cohort. In contrast, in experimental studies the researchers randomly allocate subjects to the groups being compared. We therefore play/sort a group of subjects and generally intervene (more on this to come). These approaches are good for hypothesis testing and there are two main types: laboratory trials: field trials. Now let"s create two studies: we enroll two groups of people into the study. One group is vaccinated and the other group is unvaccinated.
