Able to determine whether a disease is truly present. Tests that are not gold standard can cause problems. Will the test identify disease given the individual is diseased (and vice versa) Provide useful info to investigate or diagnose process. Given test positive, the probability of real diseased. E. g. smallpox and cowpox virus are so similar that their antibodies can react to both. Previous vaccination and exposure if measuring antibodies. Now creating antibodies with signals if they are from vaccination.
