Document Summary

The physiological and psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals. A process that influences : direction (activation, persistence, vigour (intensity) Measurement of motivation: often inferred through behaviour. Motivated (pushed) by need to reduce drives. Homeostasis: a tendency to maintain a balanced internal state or physiological equilibrium. Psychology of hunger: sights and smells of food, high calorie food are rewarding, ex. Naturally through energy homeostasis we maintain our set point. Less of a set point and more of a settling point: difficult to change but does not change, drop below set point metabolism slows down. Surprising role of fidgeting: video clip. Energy homeostasis- long- term matching of food intake to energy expenditure. Baseline metabolic rate (bmr)- at rest, the rate at which a body uses energy for vital functions. Positive energy balance- calorie intake exceeds expenditure: weight gain. Negative energy balance: calorie intake falls short: weight loss.
